When Guitar Hero first came out (seems like ages ago, right?), guitarists everywhere could claim bragging rights on the fact that they could play an actual instruments. It didn’t matter that they couldn’t master that fifth orange button on the video game’s hard setting; they could play real chords! South Park addressed this very poignantly: “Real guitars are for old people!”
When Rock Band came out last year, drummers couldn’t claim such bragging rights. Yeah, the four pad/bass drum set-up hardly resembeled a real set, but the gameplay required enough rhythm and ambidexterity that it could actually improve someone’s drum technique.
For Rock Band 2, ION has developed a set that further blurs the distinction between real and video game. Check out this picture:
Not only are there cymbals added (making it a standard 5-piece), but it’s compatable with an Alesis DM5 module that will allow you to play them as a real-life instrument in a real-life band! Of course, if you’re going to go to all that trouble, you might as well just get a real set…
